Louise Mallard has a weak heart. One day, she hears that her husband Brently Mallard has died in a train accident.
At first, she cries a lot. Then she goes to her room and sits near a window. Slowly, she starts to feel something strange. She feels free. She thinks now she can live for herself, not for her husband.
She becomes happy and whispers, “free, free, free.”
But suddenly, her husband comes back home alive. He was not in the accident.
Seeing him, Louise becomes shocked and dies immediately. Doctors say she died because of great joy. But actually, she dies because her freedom is lost again.
